"With it's factory in Llantwit Fardre, the Rhondda valley South Wales, Gilbern was a truly Welsh car company founded during the late 1950's by the unlikely combination a master butcher and a German engineer: GILes Smith and BERNard Friese" -from A brief history of Gilbern Cars LTD.
I' sure that all of us here on Oppo knows something about a car that others don't, or know about a car/company others don't. This is something I encounter whenever the question of a dream garage comes up here, I ALWAYS mention the Gilbern Invader and when I do there is always one or two people who say "man, that thing looks AWESOME why have I not heard about this before?".
Well, perhaps because they only made something like a 1000 cars in total, But I think they all look great, the Invader and it's predessor the Geenie has a special place in my heart, but I can't deny that both the GT and the T11 are cool cars as well.
The GT
The T11 (only one made sadly)
This is where I know should write a long article about Gilbern Cars LTD, but since I've been awake since friday AND the fact that my native language is not the queens English I'll spare you that travesty and link to a page or four that talks about this magnificent company. And yes, this might just be for those of us that are complete anoracs..

It's a pretty awesome car ;) Just a shame they used the Essex V6 not the Rover V8,

Love the Gilbern Invader. There's a shooting brake one that's been on sale for a while now, along with this gorgeous rally-spec one.

I really like the hatchback, the orange one is cool to, but it's a genie not an invader ;)
But how did you find this post? I wrote it on wednesday, it should be hidden away WAAAAY down deep in oppo :)

Drat. I'm usually quite good with my obscure cars :)
I remember flicking past it a while back but I couldn't comment as I was at work. Then it popped up on one of DasWauto's Best of Oppo posts.

The genie and the invader look about exactly the same though, so no wonder you got them mixed up. The invader got a better chassis than the genie and only came with the 3.0 litre essex while the genie could have either the 2.5 or the 3.0 iirc.
I did not know it was on best of, but that explains why so many suddendly recommended it days after I first wrote it.

Pretty common modification dropping in a V8. There are other 'specials' with an Invader mk 3 with full Escort Cosworth engine and running gear, which enters rallys in Wales. There is another being created at the moment with a 3l v6 and 4wd from. Subaru Legacy.
They are very fun cars and not hugely exorcise to buy and run.
